Rates & Inclusions Kura Boutique Hotel

kura design villas uvita costa rica

This posh boutique hotel offers a blend of upscale modern design, traditional cultural influences, and a surprising wealth of sustainability initiatives. Perhaps the best example of the marriage of eco and chic at Kura is the pool. It’s a four-way infinity edge design tiled in jade green that’s so stunning it’s worth buying a new bathing suit for. And the whole thing is kept clean using a non-salty salt process instead of chlorine. Only three trees were cut down during construction of Kura and 30 solar panels keep the resort mostly off the grid.

Junior Suites

Tropical Infinity Villas include a modern, elite design and a privileged location, with extra wide terraces for dreaming, and getting lost in the horizon. Owned by Bret Love (a veteran journalist/photographer) and Mary Gabbett (business manager/videographer), USA Today named us one of the world's Top 5 Travel Blogging Couples. We were also featured in the 2017 National Geographic book, Ultimate Journeys for Two, for which we contributed a chapter on our adventures in Rwanda.

Junior Suite

A six-villa, adults-only aerie overlooking Ballena National Marine Park, on the southern Pacific coast. Junior Suites are 68sq.m (740sq.ft) of luxury jungle living. Located at canopy level, Junior Suites are front-row tickets to tropical jungle action. You’ll be in for a show of toucans and exotic birds against a blue ocean backdrop.

Nearby Hotels

The resort is nestled in the lush tropical forest, with views over the Pacific Ocean and the town of Uvita. There is a 15-minute drive to the main road and the largest town of Manuel Antonio is an hour’s drive away. Guests are recommended to fly into San JosĂ© airport, which is a three and a half hour drive. A private driver, small flight into Quepos or helicopter transfer can be arranged. There are two Master suites that are larger than the Infinity suites and sit higher on the hill for increased privacy and unique ocean views. The suites have expansive interiors and Kura-style plunge pools on their private terraces, for the ultimate luxury.

Luxury Costa Rica

Practice yoga against the rainforest and ocean backdrop, or just relax with a book and a cocktail. When night falls, the Sky Lounge transforms into a magical hideaway flooded with stars. Arrange for a private dinner or a candlelit honeymoon toast, for an evening to remember.

The nearest airport is Palmar Sur, 28 mi from Kura Boutique Hotel Member of the Cayuga Collection , and the property offers a paid airport shuttle service. The Junior Suite Villas are great for those who want to keep an eye on the wildlife, as they are located closer to the forest. The Junior Suite Villas have double hammocks and double showers. A village of waterfalls, wildlife, and slow sustainable living, Uvita offers an authentic slice of real Costa Rica. From chic eateries and farmers markets to whale-watching, there’s plenty to explore and experience for even the most well-travelled. With the design focussing on a fusion between architecture and biology, sustainability is at the heart of Kura to create the perfect tropical minimalism.

Too it is an intimate setting of only six villas, which makes it a perfect setting for a romantic getaway and an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate in one of the country’s most bio-diverse areas. Awake then, to the sight of rainforest mists rising like a bridal veil under the sun, the view stretching to the jungle-fringed beaches below. The villas were created with help from the sustainable hospitality group Cayuga Collection (a T+L Global Vision Award winner in 2012) and utilize solar power, bamboo ceilings, and rain showers. There are no TVs instead you are invited to spend time in the hammock on your private terrace watching the sun fade the surrounding verdancy into rich, cricket-sung darkness. The center of the complex contains a refreshing saltwater infinity pool dotted around which is white leather furniture where cocktails are served.

Property practices

The perfect escape from everything may be a luxurious spa treatment, or sitting in the private Sky Lounge to soak in the natural beauty of this enchanting area with its breathtaking views. You may want to lie back and relax in the sun along the inviting infinity pool, swimming in the natural saltwater. The Kura offers an on-site restaurant serving delicious fusion cuisine, and for a little nightlife, step into Kara Villa’s Diablo's Bar.

Not so at Kura where ethics are as much a priority as esthetics. All wood is farmed and sustainable and bamboo is used wherever possible. All lights are LED and Martin managed to find bulbs that emit satisfying, flattering light. If you were to turn all of the lights on in your room (shame on you) you’d only be using the energy of one conventional bulb. Four years ago owners and creators Martin Wells and Alejandra Umana, a young couple from Costa Rica, saw the property on a steep, jungle-covered hillside above the town of Uvita on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast.

These spacious suites are ideal to make your honeymoon magical. From the moody lighting and double rainfall showerheads to the stunning slate and wood decorative accents, Wells’ every design detail works perfectly to set a cozy, intimate mood. This is clearly a place built for tropical romance, and no kids are allowed. The resort opened on a long, winding gravel road high in the hills above Uvita, Costa Rica in January 2013.

The chic black Emerson ceiling fans are silent and feature perfectly designed blades that move a massive amount of air even on the lowest and most energy-efficient setting. If you feel the need to use the air conditioners you can rest easy. They’re EcoX units which use inversion technology to reduce energy use. Cleaning products aren’t just biodegradable, they’re local as well which reduces the environmental impact of transportation. The six suites are stunners of modern, clean, sleek design—all teak, glass, stone, steel and polished concrete. The super comfy beds have light and fan controls built smartly into the headboards.

The Fall of the House of Usher review a gleefully terrifying take on Edgar Allan Poe Television

the fall of the house of usher parents guide

The rest of the family regroups to discuss how they’re going to spin this latest disaster. Seeing as Camille is the family’s go-to PR person, she explains the approach they’re going to take to pain Prospero as a charitable Usher family prince and help gain sympathy for the family amid the ongoing trial. The Fall of the House of Usher‘s premiere episode is mostly about setting up what we’ll be seeing throughout the rest of the season, as each episode (mostly) focuses on one sibling and how they end up dead. A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination. In the Roger Corman film from 1960, released in the United States as House of Usher, Vincent Price starred as Roderick Usher, Myrna Fahey as Madeline and Mark Damon as Philip Winthrop, Madeline's fiancĂ©. The film was Corman's first in a series of eight films inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

The Black Cat

He’s clearly still very hurt about the fact that Morrie lied the night she went to Perry’s party, and he’s not going to let it go. Young Roderick and young Auguste meet for the first time via flashback. Auguste shows up at Roderick’s door because he found his signature on a bunch of suspicious paperwork regarding human trials. Roderick claims he has no idea what Auguste is talking about, but Auguste can sense that he and his wife are struggling, living hand-to-mouth. At this point, they have Tamerlane and Frederick and are struggling to make ends meet.

Episodes

the fall of the house of usher parents guide

Auguste interrupts because this night, in particular, is very special. It’s the start of everything and there have been countless rumors regarding it. For now, Roderick just lets Auguste know that he will tell him everything, but he assures Auguste that starting at the beginning is a necessity as every part of his story is important to understanding the whole picture. They’re currently testing on chimpanzees but hope to move onto human trials soon. As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house.

And so Flanagan does what anyone starting their story here would do—brings it back to the beginning, a true "record scratch" moment that trusts we won't remember what was flashed before our eyes—and will be shocked along the way all the same. The pacing can be slow at times, and some of the subplots feel underdeveloped. Additionally, some of the horror elements may be too tame for some viewers.

Reviews for AI Apps and Tools

Whether or not you find this show scary is subjective and depends on your tolerance for horror. However, I wouldn’t consider The Fall of the House of Usher a scary show in my opinion. With characters constantly dying in brutal ways, it can create a sense of unease and tension. The constant showing of dead bodies and jump scares can also be unsettling.

Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood)

Back to the ’70s, the seventh episode of The Fall of the House of Usher begins with a flashback scene of a younger Roderick and Auguste rehearsing how it’ll go when Roderick goes on the record to speak out against Fortunato. In the present day, Auguste tells Roderick that he really only trusted him because Annabel was such a good person. Lenore watches a movie with her mom and to her surprise, her mom speaks and tells Lenore that she loves her. Lenore goes to see her dad who’s bowling in their house, asking if a doctor is ever coming. Frederick basically blows her off, however, saying that Morrie is doing well and the doctors will come if they need to.

The "Legitimate" Kids

After Lenore’s death, Roderick goes to his office and realizes the time has come. He turns around and sees a vision of his dead children and grandchild all sitting in chairs. It starts raining outside and when Roderick looks, it turns out to be bodies falling from the sky, not actual rain. Verna says those are all of his victims who died at the hands of Fortunato’s drugs. She instructs Roderick to go back to his childhood home and call Auguste to come meet him. It’s a show loosely adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s 1839 short story of the same name and some of his other works.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER is an eight-episode horror series loosely based on the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name, from writer-director Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, The Midnight Club). As the series begins, we meet mega-rich pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood, The Resident) at the end of his long and luxurious life. Usher, who has just buried the last of his six adult children, sits by the fireplace with his former nemesis, prosecutor C. As each episode progresses, we learn more about Roderick's connection to the mysterious, shape-shifting woman (Carla Gugino, Gerald's Game) who has been shadowing his visions as she doles out ghastly punishments to his progeny. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children.

One of the other storylines in this episode revolves around Madeline, Roderick, and Arthur digging into the identity of this mysterious woman who keeps popping up everywhere. There’s a hilarious bit where Arthur shows Roderick security footage from the night Camille died and asks if he recognizes the security guard. Roderick wants him to enhance it, but as Arthur points out, that’s really only a thing on television. He tells Auguste that to understand his story, he needs to get the entire picture, going back to the time when he and Madeline were just children. Frederick Usher is Roderick’s eldest son and many of his siblings refer to him as “Froderick” because of his obsession with being like their father. He’s married to a woman named Morelle (Crystal Balint) and they have a daughter named Lenore who Roderick is quite fond of.

Roderick and Madeline are caught under the wreckage, which kills them. After meeting with her doctor, Juno tells Roderick she wants to get off Ligodone. He tells her that while it’s not addictive, she will have really heavy symptoms if she tries to get off of it.

Since he literally killed his boyfriend’s cat, Napoleon is out to find a replacement Pluto before Julius can find out what he did. For Napoleon, Verna masquerades as a worker at a cat shelter where Napoleon finds a cat eerily similar to Pluto. The only difference is that this cat is mean and it does not like Napoleon. Within minutes of meeting the cat and bringing it home, it scratches him and never wastes an opportunity to bite, scratch, or generally startle Napoleon whenever possible. We learn that even though Roderick brought Griswold the pitch about Ligodone, he didn’t accept it from him but instead went and bought Landor Pharma, the company with the chemist who made the drug. But Griswold does promote Roderick and give him a raise, intimating that he’ll keep helping him climb the ladder if Roderick keeps coming up with these good ideas.

He believed it would make them stronger, but he admits to being wrong. Though he tries to open up about needing her, there’s something wrong with Victorine. He asks her to turn down the music and when she does, they both hear the clicking noise.

Chapter I is by far the strangest of the bunch, which centers around a family finally moving into their dream home, but their home isn’t all it appears to be. The plot of the first storyline has potential, but it never fully materializes, and the quality goes downhill even moreso in the last two chapters. Netflix’s The House is a gorgeous creation in stop motion animation, yet it lacks substance. The story explicitly ties the physical House of Usher to the Usher lineage, stating that the peasants in that domain use the phrase “House of Usher” for both. However, the connection between the house and the family runs deeper than linguistic shorthand.

After hours, Victorine goes in and cuts up the dead monkey into pieces and retrieves the hardware to sneak it out and hide the evidence of what she’s been doing. Elsewhere, a young Auguste is starting to build a case against Fortunato as he detects a trail of bodies all leading back to the pharmaceutical company. Roderick and Madeline demand every member of the family attend a dinner where they’re forced to sign ironclad NDAs to protect themselves from the informant possibly spilling something that could ruin them. He wants the siblings to suss out which one of them has gone to the feds. Napoleon Usher is a drug-addicted gamer who spends his days snorting whatever he has on hand, cheating on his boyfriend Julius (Daniel Jun), and supposedly running a video game company.

While there is an official, mandated purple of the 7 line, this is the subway, and the execution of that purple varies stop by stop.

Watch The Fall of the House of Usher

She hits a mirror with the fire poker and a shard of glass gets stuck in her face, but she’s too distracted by the woman’s voice. She keeps trying to find her and then gets a piece of glass stuck in her foot before she continues swinging the fire poker all around. Verna disappears, and Tammy jumps on her bed and hits the ceiling mirror with the fire poker, falling back onto the bed and getting stabbed with huge shards of glass in the process. Arthur goes to check out the crime scene at Victorine’s and finds a patient file, recognizing Verna’s photo in a copy of her ID. He takes it with him as he continues to investigate who this woman is, soon calling up Madeline and telling him that the address on the ID is her and Roderick’s childhood home. He shows up at her place unannounced and apologizes for turning the siblings against each other.

He starts tearing apart the whole apartment using Thor’s hammer (“I can get Hemsworth to send me another!”) to bust down the walls after Verna tells him she can hear the cat inside. The replacement Pluto also has a habit of bringing in bloody animal carcasses and leaving them all over the place. Interestingly, Julius never sees the cat, it’s always just run out of the room or hiding whenever he’s around. Things come to a head between the couple and the new possibly-ghost cat in bed one night when Napoleon finds a bloody rat under his pillow and accidentally knees Julius in the face. And speaking of Verna, she’s also the one who is in charge as the security guard that night at Victorine’s lab. Camille comes face-to-face with Verna for the first time that night as she sneaks in to take pictures and expose Victorine for what she’s been doing.

Common Sense Media Reviewers

A funeral is held for Perry, Camille, and Leo, and at the church, Roderick has more disturbing visions of his kids’ bodies. The remaining siblings, which include Frederick, Victorine, and Tammy, discuss the current state of their family and where to go next. Madeline tells Roderick that it’s beneficial to them for Roderick to stay there, to get beside Griswold and later stab him in the back. Annabel overhears Madeline’s disturbing speech to Roderick and later tells him she really does not like his sister. Camille’s assistants, Tina and Toby, succeed in digging up something damning on Victorine. They’ve learned that she’s allegedly swapping out dead chimpanzees for live ones, meaning when one of the test chimps dies on the table, she makes it seem like they survived so her trials appear more successful than they really are.

Edgar Allan Poe

They share a drink and talk about whether or not they actually believed Verna all those years ago. Madeline gets up but starts to feel woozy before realizing that Roderick must have spiked her drink with something. She falls to the floor and he places her body up on a table, realizing he wants to preserve her as best as possible. He brings out those sapphire eyes, presumably in an effort to mummify her like the Egyptians did. But as we see Roderick point his knife at her, the scene cuts to Auguste asking what he did to her.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Review: Family Is Hell

She successfully weans herself off of Ligodone, while Arthur is arrested. Finally, Roderick comes clean to Auguste in the present timeline about what happened that night in 1980 and how it changed his and Madeline’s entire lives. The wrecking ball comes in and Frederick and Verna lay on the floor together as the building comes down.

In film and television

Each episode is stuffed with literary easter eggs and fun references for fans to watch and rewatch over and over again. Flanagan also excels at developing complex and well-rounded characters, and the Usher siblings are no exception. Roderick and his sister Madeline are both deeply flawed individuals, but Flanagan does a masterful job of making them sympathetic and relatable. Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a brillant exit of Mike Flanagan’s contribution to the streaming service, delivering the horror so many have come to love. Check out the details in my The Fall of the House of Usher parents guide review. Where The House falls short is in its story-telling, which is strange and tiresome.

Obviously, none of the content just listed would be appropriate for young kids to be watching, so we don’t recommend watching this show when they’re around. Let’s take a look at what concerned parents need to know about the age ratings of the series before letting their younger children watch The Fall of the House of Usher parents guide. The House could have truly been something special if it had nailed the storytelling. It is clear they spent much more time on the animation, which for what it’s worth, is worth the watch for that alone.

What's the Story?

Verna tells the siblings that she can guarantee they’ll be running Fortunato, their family will want for nothing, and they’ll never face legal trouble if they take her deal. Madeline would have to die with him as well, as they came into the world together so they have to go out the same. Following Tammy’s death, Frederick is now the swing vote for the company. Madeline tells Arthur that she’s the one who should be the new CEO; they can use her algorithm and rebrand Fortunato as a tech company.

Victorine meets with the patient about to go through with the heart trial, who is really Verna, and although she admits to being nervous, she agrees to go through with it if Al says it’s a good idea. Victorine starts to hear a weird, repetitive chirping noise and she can’t figure out where it’s coming from. The noise continues to get really loud before abruptly stopping and then starting back up again. In just about the worst timing, Madeline goes to see Victorine and wants to know when she’ll be ready for the human trials. Victorine is confused as to why her aunt and her father have such an interest all of a sudden. Of course, we know it’s because of Roderick’s worsened condition, but his daughter has no idea.

Juno meets with her doctor, making the decision that she wants to get off of Ligodone. She’s on 2,000 milligrams a day, and she no longer wants to be dependent on it. Napoleon and fake-Pluto get into a full-on brawl at one point and Napoleon squeezes him so hard the cat’s eye pops out.

At his office, Roderick talks to the visions of his deceased kids while opening up a package that contains Egyptian antiques, including sapphire eyes. Madeline comes to his office and notices that he still has blood all over him following Victorine’s death. He explains that he needed to rush over to the office before the press got to him.

The vision ends and Roderick tries to relieve Auguste of his burden, saying no one died because he lied about there being an informant. Over the course of two weeks, all six of Roderick’s kids have perished, so Prospero (Sauriyan Sapkota), Camille (Kate Siegel), and Napoleon (Rahul Kohli) died the week before and now they’re burying the final three. Even though all of the deaths are quite strange, investigations have revealed that none were related, but Roderick believes differently. It all ties back to a mysterious woman named Verna (Carla Gugino), who was present at every death. In Usher, we find an interestingly constructed story that begins, in a way, at the end.

And when members of the Usher family start dropping off one by one, it becomes apparent that something far more sinister is afoot. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. Based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and borrowing liberally from many of his best-known premises to great effect, "The Fall of the House of Usher" opens with the uber-wealthy Usher family in freefall. Patriarch Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his twin sister Madeline (Mary McDonnell) have built a pharmaceutical empire on the back of one brilliant painkiller — sound familiar? — and now it's all crashing down amid a criminal case pushed by dogged prosecutor C.

In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake. It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" is proof that Flanagan still has plenty to say in the horror space, and it's a wonderful sendoff for his Netflix era. Character names, plots, and even direct quotes make their way into every fiber of the series, setting the tone for what's to come — and thankfully, it's a tone that sets the show apart. Like Poe's own grandiose stories of dark adventure and macabre death, "House of Usher" is operatic, darkly comic, and rich with bombast. It’s rated TV-MA, meaning it’s only meant to be watched by mature, adult audiences. It was given this age rating for strong language, sex, smoking, substances, suicide, and graphic violence.

The millennium's dream houses might have updated touches, but Los-Angeles-based designer Amy Sklar says they represent a health mix between old and new. "After the Victorian foray, we started to to see what looks and feels not dissimilar to the good old 70's townhouse," she explains. With so much pink and fun, feminine touches, the '90s were arguably a great decade for dream houses—but why stop at a house?

Dollhouses are not only entertaining but they also help in the development of your child. They may seem like simple toys but dollhouses come with a range of benefits that can help your child learn and grow in many ways. Dollhouses are timeless, you can rebuild them and save them for a very long time. Your child can easily arrange furniture or add characters in their little playhouse. These activities help them cultivate a strong foundation for creative thought that can last for a lifetime. As we look back at Barbie's extensive real-estate portfolio—and the realized dreams that came with each acquisition—we couldn't help but notice that some of her plastic properties have shaped the way we think about our own homes.

"It's almost like looking at an old photo where you can’t quite remember, but you know you’ve been in a similar house as kid with the same froufrou bedding." While the 1979 iteration may not have all the bells and whistles of the more recent models—and, of course, that primarily pink palette—designer Candace Shure admits it's her personal dream house. "I’m a huge fan of its louvered windows, lattice front doors, and cheery yellow accents," she shares. Malibu-based luxury real estate company RubyHome, has put the home’s price tag at $10 million — significantly higher than the estimates from the online real estate portals. The massive compound features a massive pool and waterslide, a dance floor, several Barbie-inspired bedrooms and plenty of pink. McGuirk enlightened us on what it would cost to build Barbie’s DreamHouse in New England, imagining an East Coast move for the 61-year-old icon.

But unlike Barbie's original Dreamhouse—which is essentially one big room—this version offers guidance how to make the most of limited square feet. Sections for dining, living, and sleeping give Barbie a full-functioning home, while small touches like a Murphy bed and swivel provides plenty of small space savviness. The Barbie dreamhouse isn't just the star of a certain movie premiering this week—have you heard of it? And of course it's the inspiration for a beyond-fun home reno show. Before those latest entries in Barbie Land, where pink reigns supreme and every corner is packed with unapologetic glamour, there was the original doll herself.

Dollhouses are more than just playsets; it is every child’s dream to have a dollhouse of their choice where their imagination can come to life. Dollhouses are a major source of enjoyment for our little ones. No matter which age you are in dollhouses never cease to mesmerize you. It is so much fun to decorate a dollhouse with colorful toys and furniture to make playtime more exciting. There are many options available in the market and you can choose one for your child, depending on your child’s area of interest. Whether they are looking for wooden dollhouses, dollhouse furniture, or captivating dolls, everything they need is available to help them make a magical world of imaginative play.

But for a more accurate guesstimate, it might take the expertise of local real estate experts who are familiar with the homes in the area and what they usually fetch on the open market. Obviously, oceanfront property in one of America’s most desired enclaves is going to cost a pretty penny. But a gaudy manor inspired by the stylistic choices of a fashionista children’s doll is a bit of an unprecedented sale. It’s important to note that the home isn’t actively for sale and is privately owned, so any speculation about its price is just that. But just like Barbie herself, it is fun to play pretend.

"Anyone watching the 90s TV show Full House, which took place in San Francisco, would find the ornate Victorian details of this Dreamhouse familiar," she notes. The production also features a museum exhibit where guests can see how Barbie, her Dreamhouse and her various vehicles have evolved over the years. You can even see the Barbie doll that started it all, clad in a black and white striped swimsuit and her iconic ponytail.

After designing the layout, set the scene for any story with three songs, two soundscapes and customizable light settings! Then, double the fun with transforming furniture -- the BBQ grill reverses to reveal a dessert buffet, the entertainment center reverses to reveal a pet play area, and a bunk bed folds down from the wall. Kids can play out any story, from an ordinary day to the ultimate get-together with a kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, pool, balcony, party room and more. Lift and lower Barbie® doll and her friends in the working elevator, fill the pool with water to make a splash, soak up some sun on the third-floor balcony and rooftop deck, and host a pet playdate with a puppy pool and slide. -- feature realistic touches and textures that bring any Barbie® story to life.

In her experience, local builders charge from $250 up to high-end at $650 per square foot, shares McGuirk. Based on how many bells and whistles Barbie adds or deletes, her East Coast, 78-square-foot DreamHouse will cost anywhere between $19,500 and $50,700 to build. McGuirk just listed a 10,000-square-foot lot in a suburb of Boston for $250,000, which would accommodate a lot of Barbie DreamHouses. With an array of career ambitions (and cute outfits to match!), the beach blonde has managed to remain an arbiter of taste since her birth in 1959. Then, in 1962, Mattel released the very first Barbie Dreamhouse, giving the doll a special place to call home. Several decades and many iterations later, Barbie's dreamhouse remains one of the most famous landmarks in fictional architecture—and continues to serve as inspiration for interior designers. Let your child pretend and play with dolls of their choice because every child has their own personality and style. Choose from baby dolls to adventurous characters, these dolls add a touch of magic to your dollhouse, turning it into a hub of storytelling and make-believe.

Barbie Dreamhouse

The dreamhouse might've been the perfect accessory for budding homebodies, but Barbie lovers with a penchant for adventure loved her Motorhouse. With angular furniture and a boxy television, the inaugural Dreamhouse feels like a 1962 time capsule. (Who doesn't love the collegiate pennants and dreamy photo of Ken?) Barbie's first home might've been on the smaller side, but Tara McCauley points out that big dreams are seldom restrained by square footage. Since square footage is at a premium, the Motorhouse isn't as dreamy as some of its predecessors—but might we argue it offers something better? From a practical footprint to a breakfast nook that transforms into a bed, this version proves that home can be anywhere—regardless of its size or location.

With its multi-story waterslide—the longest in Barbie history, according to Mattel—it's easy to write off the 2023 Dreamhouse as pure fantasy. However, when you look a little closer, you'll notice this property is decked out with amenities that speak to what the modern-day homeowner wants. Perhaps the most quintessential dream house is the one Mattel debuted in 1998. (In fact, a similar model was sold as a Christmas ornament later that year.) McCauley notes that—with its scalloped edges along the facade and two-storied silo—this Dreamhouse bears a striking resemblance to San Francisco's Painted Ladies.

"The Barbie dreamhouse was the first time I encountered the idea of home as an extension of a fashionable, charismatic, dynamic woman," shares San Francisco-based designer Emilie Munroe. "It inspired the notion of domestic life emulating personal energy and style, which is a mantra I support to this day." From the pastel palette to the Laura Ashley-like floral details throughout the premises, this Dreamhouse feels like a '90s time capsule—with a luxe twist. "How fun is that for inspiration for today's home? The house is vintage with modern amenities like a working elevator!" A sweet balcony and swing for little sister Kelly round out the space—offering the perfect hangout for Barbie's community.

The real estate firm evaluated the average sale price of comparable homes with similar amenities, and then added a 10% “premium” due to the home’s one-of-a-kind appearance and appeal. The home appears to be located on the block of Pacific Coast Highway. Estimates from the usual real estate listing sites vary pretty wildly. Zillow gives the home an estimated price tag of $5,347,400, Redfin‘s estimates comes in at $3,491,022, and Realtor.com give the most optimistic estimate at $7,277,000. Earlier this month, Airbnb revealed that guests can sign up to stay at the life-sized doll house, free of charge, as part of a promotion by Mattel.

Toward the end of the 20th century—more specifically, the '80s and '90s—Mattel began to produce dream houses that resemble the plastic pads we know and love today. (And, in true Barbie fashion, her digs boasted a range of pink hues.) While Shure says these decades were not known for their design, she finds herself drawn to this Dreamhouse era. Between the wheelchair-accessible elevator and integrated light and sounds, this Dreamhouse is equal parts inclusive and innovative. There's also a spare room on the top floor, which can be reimagined into a home office, gym, slumber party room for Barbie's friends, or even an in-law apartment for Ken's parents. (Plus, a pet slide and elevator makes this place suitable for those furry friends.) And, on the design front, the open-air structure and slanted pink roofs look a lot like Airbnb's real-life Dreamhouse... As the world waits with bated breath for the premiere of Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, the design community has thrusted the spotlight on the dreamhouse.

Her reinvented DreamHouse, which retails for $179, has three stories, eight rooms, an outdoor area, a rooftop pool and slide, a working elevator, and a garage. Speaking of small spaces, Mattel thought beyond the typical four walls with this foldable, portable alternative. Though Barbie's dream houses typically become larger and more grandiose as time goes by, the Folding Pretty House feels uncharacteristically small and simple. "It could get pretty small when packed, kind of a throwback to the very first homes that had a definite pack and play vibe," Sklar shares.

The 20,000 square-foot attraction allows fans to step inside Barbie's life-sized Dreamhouse, try on one of Barbie's careers for size and even get in the driver's seat of a Barbie Camper Van designed by West Coast Customs. “While it certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste, the 3,500-square-foot space, views of the Pacific Ocean, private pool, and totally unique design result in a hefty price tag for the property,” said Tony Mariotti, CEO of RubyHome. "I get a feeling of childhood nostalgia looking at that floral wallpaper and frilly furniture from those dreamhousedesigns," she muses.

Our family-owned business has served the Colorado market since 2002. We have an extensive network of trade partners are happy to provide recommendations when requested. Originally from New Mexico, Jeff started in lighting in Colorado in 1991. Coming from a family of architects, he approaches lighting design with a strong respect for the design intent of the architect, as well as the vision of the homeowner. Lighting helps define a space as tranquil or exciting, romantic or dramatic, depending on how you use it. Jeff usually spends his weekends hiking with his wife or reading a good book.

Home wellness centers range from a “beautiful spa-like bathroom with a steam shower” to massage rooms, changing areas, “and we’re doing one for a high-profile client that has a full Turkish hammam,” Harrison says. “I’ve had clients who want a salt room.” Cue increased staff to service such high-maintenance wet areas and additional entries. New-build and renovated estates are blueprinted not only for the comfort of owners and guests but also for the integration of staff spaces, which sometimes include entire wings, with living areas. Harrison and his team gutted and rebuilt the dated 1980s Mediterranean estate in 2016 at a cost of about $40 million.
